How Does
Hydroelectricity work?
Hydroelectricity is electricity made using water.
Hydro is a Greek word for water. Electricity is a form of energy. Hydroelectricity is electricity up in the Snowy Mountains.
The water is stored in dams and rivers and behind a dam
wall.
When the water is stored it has potential energy.
Potential energy is movement energy.
The water is released from the dams and sent through the pipes. The steeper the pipes are the faster the water flows.
Then it is goes to the turbines. When the water moves it no longer has potential but it has kinetic energy.
Once the water goes through the pipes it goes to the turbines.
Turbines are a machine that works with water. The Turbines spin really fast when running water comes down to the turbines.
The turbines transform the kinetic energy into electricity.
Once the water has been through the turbines the electricity that has been made goes to the power lines.
The water is released through the Murray and the Murrumbidgee river.
Hydroelectricity works by water turning turbines to produce electricity and that is how hydroelectricity works.
